This had to be one of my favorite books. The details were amazing I actually pictured myself there. The only flaw is that there will not be a second book.

I love the story, very youthful and fresh, reminded me of myself those teenager years. I love de description Denise did of Paris, never been there but would like to visit, not sure about the catacombs though ;). I loved the love story between the main characters and mostly the love to music in an exciting city. The developing of the story would keep you reading nonstop until you finish. Denise never disappoints!

  • Magical Teen Romance

One year after her father left his family to go to Paris, Sophie and her brother are invited – or more like required – to spend their summer in Paris with him and his new wife and step-daughter, Camille. Still hurting from his betrayal, Sophie is not looking forward to the trip. At first, it seems as awful as she had imagined – tension with her father, a hateful stepsister for a roommate and tour guide, a language barrier, and no piano to practice on for her upcoming scholarship competition. But with the help (and possible romance?) from one of Camille’s friends, things begin to look up. One Paris Summer captured me from page one and refused to let go. I read so many books, but only 1 in 10 addict me like this one did. I found myself thinking about the characters – and yearning to go to Paris – long after I finished reading it. I highly recommend it. The romance was sweet and had its share of ups and downs. First, of course, was the initial “Does he like me? Should I like him?” jitters, leading into something more lasting and beautiful. There are complications, misunderstandings, and an attempted sabotage, all of which nearly broke up the relationship. But it survived and was all the stronger for it. Also, the characters did not put too much stock in the romance; what I mean is, yes, the relationship between the characters was extremely important to them, but they did not make all of their decisions solely based on each other. They did not let their relationship stop them from following their dreams, which, in my mind, is a sign of a healthy relationship. One Paris Summer addressed many topics, not just the romance, which was part of the reason it was so amazing. The father-daughter and step-family relationships were important to the story. They were difficult for the characters to deal with and were addressed very well. They also gave me a glimpse of what a few of the people I know, who are in similar situations, have gone through. Music was another major theme. Its ability to express emotion and pain as well as its beauty were instrumental in Sophie’s life. They gave her opportunities to further her dreams as well as healing. And experiencing a different culture was also a theme. It has to be, considering it is about a couple American teens living in Paris for the summer. One Paris Summer presented the culture differences very well. For one, differences in the way people conduct their romantic relationships had a large impact on the plot, as the characters had to bridge the gap in order for the relationship to succeed. And the beauty of Paris and the French culture was evident and made me long to experience it for myself. One Paris Summer was magical. I loved it from the beginning and will never stop. I highly recommend it to YA contemporary romance readers. I received a free copy of this book from Book Look Bloggers in exchange for an honest review.

I honestly don't know how DGS can write such wonderful books in so many different genres. One Paris Summer is definitely a YA romance, but it is so much more. There are many "non-romantic" relationships in this story - Sophie and her brother, Eric; their relationship with their estranged father; their relationship with a new stepmother and vindictive stepsister; making new friends in a new city; and Sophie's relationship with her music. This is a story with depth. I found it a thoroughly enjoyable read.
  • I Love This Story!

This book was simply impeccable. An honest look at a family broken and a girl trying to find herself, navigate her brokenness and finding love for the first time. Denise Grover Swank wrote a smart, mature and compelling young adult story, full of layers and complexity Sophie and her brother Eric are off to spend the summer in Paris with their father, but this is not a happy trip. Sophie and Eric are angry and hurt that their father abandon their family for a job in Paris and a new family. They both have had to give up their plans for the summer for a father who seems oblivious to the lives of the children he left behind. To make matters worth, Sophie has to deal with the daughter of her new stepmom, Camille, who is none to happy about the situation and makes it her life goal to sabotage Sophie's time in Paris. Sophie is a girl lost. She is insecure, afraid and self-conscious. She feels she lost everything they day her father left and doesn't know how to handle not having him in her life. She clings to her anger and resentment to her father, for fear of being hurt by him again. What I loved about this book is Sophie. She is a great YA heroine. A girl her is lost due to pain in her past, but a girl who refuses to give up, regardless of her stumbles or mistakes she made. Sophie shows strength as she refuses to let her new "sister" step all over her and refuses to let her anger swallow her whole. Instead Sophie begins to take control over her own life, which includes her love of playing the piano. Sophie learns throughout the book that she must do things for herself and not to make others happy and as she starts living her life for herself she is able to find the strength to forgive her father and embrace her new family and just maybe find a love that will last a lifetime.
