  • Came for the promise of horror, wasn’t the least bit distraught

I found this book recommendation on booktok. I had high hopes for it, however the beginning was painfully slow the writing read like a wattpad fan fiction to the point I’d have to reread it several times. The author portrays the main protagonist as an idiot, the entire time it was just a joke about how women are weak and they will never escape the atrocities of men. Also the ending absolute let down, saw it from a mile away. I was majority let down in the horror aspect as well, I wanted something other than Stephen king to read and this book was not the vibe. However if it became a movie adaptation it might do better, and maybe they won’t portray these women as timid and weak.

Pros: +love the concept. +a big nostalgia pop. +this can definitely be a movie, don’t know about a tv show. +enjoyed the mystery and misdirections. +definitely a page turner Cons: -no real threats, just imagined threats. How about actually killing some of the “final girls” as oppose to imagining if they died and finding out later they didn’t? -reduce the travel or include the real threats into the travel. -even though this is a nostalgia pop, you gotta have some original stuff in here like come up with a new way to “decode”. Conclusion: I enjoyed reading it but, I was let down as I was reading it and reached the ending. It’s like watching a great movie trailer to then be let down when you watch the movie. I probably hyped it up too much in my mind or he was constrained by the logistics of how these “murders” could’ve happened. Nevertheless, I’m hoping the adaptation can be better.

I COULDN’T STOP READING! If I could give more than 5 stars I would! By far the best thing I’ve read this year, and it’s going to take a lot to beat it in my book! I personally am a Horror geek but you definitely don’t have to be to enjoy this book. I’m an avid reader but I can honestly say I’ve never finished a book this fast in my life, well freakin’ done!
  • About women but not FOR women

Intriguing as the concept of this book is, the plot is fueled by re-victimizing women who still haven’t healed from their first nightmares come to life. It features, if not favors, victim blaming and serves to belittle the protagonist at every turn in some long and unconvincing attempt at showing her development. The main characters in this book are subjected to physical and emotional pain from start to finish with the “twist” only supporting the narrative that women are weak, easily manipulated and only exist to serve a man’s most likely sadistic - but at the very least narcissistic - purpose. If you’re interested in being offended as a woman or on behalf of all women, this book is for you. If you only care that this book tries to be as meta as the Scream movie franchise and not the deeper meaning of what this author is supporting, this book is also for you. While the book is entertaining in a few parts and the writing is decent, I still would not recommend this book.
