Description

Homicide detective Eve Dallas must untangle a twisted family history while a hostage’s life hangs in the balance—in Abandoned in Death by New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb.

The woman’s body was found in the early morning, on a bench in a New York City playground. She was clean, her hair neatly arranged, her makeup carefully applied. But other things were very wrong—like the tattoo and piercings, clearly new. The clothes, decades out of date. The fatal wound hidden beneath a ribbon around her neck. And the note: Bad Mommy, written in crayon as if by a child.

Eve Dallas turns to the department’s top profiler, who confirms what seems obvious to Eve: They’re dealing with a killer whose childhood involved some sort of trauma—a situation Eve is all too familiar with herself. Yet the clues suggest a perpetrator who’d be roughly sixty years old, and there are no records of old crimes with a similar MO. What was the trigger that apparently reopened such an old wound and sent someone over the edge?

When Eve discovers that other young women—who physically resemble the first victim—have vanished, the clock starts ticking louder. But to solve this case she will need to find her way into a hidden place of dim light and concrete, into the distant past, and into the cold depths of a shattered mind.

I am a social psychologist and I work with teams in organizations so I do not have the clinical insights that are in this book; but, I have observed persons in organizations display “alternative personas” when placed in different circumstances;e.g. with customers, with bosses, and even with family. While the personality is not “split” in these cases, the difference is dramatic enough to make this book very believable. Nice work!

Different kind of Lieutenant Dallas novel. Part of the book was a 3 and other parts were 4/5. A lot of back and forth in time which was a little confusing. Good investigating novel and as usual great interview techniques.

It’s was a easy read, but it is not one of her best. The ending was too abrupt.
  • Good crime story but missing the Dallas personal lives.

The In Death series is always so well written but what makes them 5 star is catching up with the lives of Dallas and the crew. This book is missing that feature with just a few lines about Mavis’s house thrown in.

Something about this book started me off wrong and I’m just realizing what it is……. We all know Eve is great at what she does but to have such a fully developed theory in the first 75 pages based off of what she found by then is a bit of a stretch. There are no less than 10 other alternatives that would fit the facts and evidence collected by that point but she jumped straight to what she did. The book was still entertaining but lended toward lazy writing by just jumping straight where it did.

Eve Dallas is tired, Roark is tired, JD Robb is exhausted and New York has run out of interesting crime. Whe the reader is more interested in the details of house remodeling and tile selection than in the “crime” it is time to think about wrapping up this series. On the upside, none of the main players are physically maimed or otherwise in peril, so that’s one happy circumstance. And thank goodness there was no maudlin grousing about the urban wars this time, but devoted readers of the whole series (like me) will find nothing particularly satisfying or intriguing in this In Death outing.
  • Wow. Just wow!!!

Best one yet. I really love this series and the characters are like old friends I’ve known half my life. The storyline and the background stories are excellent!
