Lydia lives in Acapulco. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while cracks are beginning to show in Acapulco because of the cartels, Lydia’s life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. But after her husband’s tell-all profile of the newest drug lord is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Forced to flee, Lydia and Luca find themselves joining the countless people trying to reach the United States. Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they running to?

Immigration… not as cut and dry as you might think. Good story and gives a different perspective.

Well written indeed. Great adventure and much information. Ending kind of anticlimactic however.

Compelling characters gave a window into what it’s like to navigate an escape from cartel violence and cross the border with a coyote. Fictional but realistic story. Fell in love with the mother & son.
  • Great book

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It has become controversial because the author is not Latina. That is irrelevant. What is important is that it conveys true emotions and the struggles of the migrants. As well as the senseless violence of the cartels.
  • Poorly written nonsense

Could have been written by a child or an AI. Don’t bother with this one.

I have no words for the Incredible, Despicable, Incomprehensible Journey you will go on with these people. To call them Characters is too belittle them. I’m so so so glad I read this.

Beautifully written and so well done that despite how painful much of the story was, it was hard to put down. In addition it taught me an enormous amount about the trials of immigration.
