To me this book was perfection. The characters were complex, the story line intriguing. I laughed and cried and sat on the edge of my seat at times. I love how the author wrote the story it flowed well and I must admit I stayed up late wanting to finish it. Simply couldn't put it down. I am eager to rad more from this author.

I really liked the book. The author did a great job of developing the characters. The book could have used some editing, but overall it was a good read.

Fiona prefers digging in the dirt and recovering Roman artifacts to the ballrooms of the ton. Having only lasted two weeks into her first season, she was desperate to put her Grandmother’s mind at ease....hence the “invention” of Captain Knightley. Her make believe fiancé has been fighting in the war against Napoleon these last few years but with the war over, she’s going to have to produce him soon to alleviate her Grandmother’s worry over her future. Grandmother’s health would quickly decline were she to discover Fiona’s ruse and Fiona would no longer be a disappointment. Perceival’s leg was killing him. Traveling in a coach made the pain excruciating. He should not have come but he couldn’t disappoint his aunt. He should not be here. Why did his cousin, the rightful Duke, have to sacrifice his life for him? How was he to be a Duke with half a leg when he had not been trained for it? He would marry his cousin’s intended and show everyone that he could be a Duke and a proper one. But he must get to London with haste. Why was the driver stopping the blasted carriage? Oh, lord, who is that woman brandishing a knife from the roadside? And so begins the auspicious start of Fiona’s and Perceival’s story. When a misunderstanding lands a handsome stranger into her hands, what’s a girl to do but force him into pretending to be her “imaginary fiancé “. A solid storyline with a cast of secondary characters that add confound and antagonize our couple at every turn. The heroine is a delight but I found the hero needed to “grow a pair” (pardon) just a little sooner in the book. He comes through in the end to a successful conclusion. This having been my first encounter with the author, I gave her 4 ⭐️ and look forward to future titles.
