Naomi’s shoulder is injured, bones fractured. Hours (maybe a day) later she’s able to accept a friendly shoulder pat on her opposite arm. Ok, I can suspend disbelief for magic space medicine, this seems just fine, even though I know in the now-times the amount of damage described would make this unbearable unless you were drugged past lucidity. Hours after that she’s unable to walk comfortably in low gravity with injured arm and shoulder fully bound, indicating she shouldn’t have been able to accept that shoulder pat. Of course, a chapter later, she’s hip deep inside confined spaces overriding ship functions. How⁉︎ If you like lots of inconsistencies across chapters, and books, this is a series for you.

The beginning to the middle was good but I wanted more out of the ending.

A continuation of modern epic masterpiece. Fantastic installment of the series and probably my favorite so far. Thought the ending was tremendous and set up for more to come. Can’t wait!

This was quite a slow burn for the first half of the book. Lots of time spent setting things up. However I couldn’t put it down towards the last third. Very satisfying and great setup for the next one.

i don’t care about this stupid redemption narrative of copy/paste chore boy characters. both of them are weak plot vehicles the likes of which i expect to see on crappy network TV. i love everything about this story, this world, and the characters. expect melba and anna. they’re an insult. this book sucked because of them and i skipped about 100 pages because i could not get them out of my life quick enough.

This review was first published on Kurt's Frontier. Winner of the 2014 Locus Science Fiction Award Synopsis: Humanity’s great frontier was its own solar system for centuries. An alien artifact has been working through its program under the clouds of Venus. Now it is orbiting Uranus where it has constructed a gate that leads out into the broader universe. Jim Holden has been up against this artifact before. He hopes to have nothing more to do with it this time, but a complex plot unfolds that places his ship, the Rocinate, into a fleet of scientific and military ships. The big question is whether the gate is a threat or an opportunity. However, the greater danger is the one they brought with them. Review: This is the third book of James S. A. Corey’s The Expanse series. (Note, I haven’t read the others.) The story revolves around Jim Holden, Captain of the Rocinate; Bull, the security officer of Behmouth, a multi-generation ship re-purposed as a warship; Clarissa, a young woman who has sworn to kill Holden and all he cares about; and Annushka Volovodov, a pastor and a spiritual advisor to the fleet. There is also a ghost called Miller that tends to be cryptic. The concepts of the story were interesting. However, many elements were confusing, perhaps because I started with book three. I found bouncing between the four viewpoints a bit jarring. Still, the story was entertaining. The exploration of interplanetary travel was interesting.
