The Hornblower series by CS Forester is among the few historical sagas which can truly be called "timeless". The brilliance of Forester's character development and creative yet believeable plots are models for any author of the genre. In fact the creators of both the original and "Next Generation" Star Treks credit the Hornblower books as their inspiration for both these elements in their productions.
