Started reading with hesitation and lack of enthusiasm. Finished reading with buckets of tears and regret that I was ending the story of an unforgettable girl and the people who helped her survive and succeed.

The style was a bit off putting, but basically a good read. And I learned quite a bit about Nigeria.

A wonderful read indeed! I would definitely recommend it! And even read it again!

There are times this book is hard to read. To see the way women are devalued in Nigeria is very hard. Yet, this book also helps the reader see how one person can truly change another person’s life for the better. Adunni, the main character, has such strength and resolve and grace. It gives me hope for all women to have better lives.

Adunni tells her compelling story in such a way that it grabs you…grabs your attention, your very caring soul. She tells the story of so many Nigerian young women who are caught in a culture that is holding from having a voice of their own. A LOUDING VOICE.

Wow! Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Fast read, sad but uplifting. Stick with it!!

This was a heart breaking story of not only this young woman, but for the many young women in some third poor countries. But the resilience and the self loving spirit she demonstrates,is powerful and warn the soul. I cannot wait for the next book on her progress!

The book is an excellent piece about gender inequity and injustice while inspiring with a raw story that portrays Adunni’s journey of truly rising above. It started with the power of the mind nourished by the verbal professions and actions of a mother to do better for her girl-child (showing the seed very early that education gives a voice to the voiceless) and then some unexpected helpers along the way.

Loved it! Hilarious yet inspiring!! I wish there was a sequel to find out What happened next.
