Description

The New York Times bestseller now in paperback with a new epilogue.

In March 1836, the Mexican army led by General Santa Anna massacred more than two hundred Texians who had been trapped in the Alamo. After thirteen days of fighting, American legends Jim Bowie and Davey Crockett died there, along with other Americans who had moved to Texas looking for a fresh start. It was a crushing blow to Texas’s fight for freedom.

But the story doesn’t end there. The defeat galvanized the Texian settlers, and under General Sam Houston’s leadership they rallied. Six weeks after the Alamo, Houston and his band of settlers defeated Santa Anna’s army in a shocking victory, winning the independence for which so many had died.

Sam Houston and the Alamo Avengers recaptures this pivotal war that changed America forever, and sheds light on the tightrope all war heroes walk between courage and calculation. Thanks to Kilmeade’s storytelling, a new generation of readers will remember the Alamo—and recognize the lesser known heroes who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

As a native Texan with family roots back to 1836, this is one of the best, well written accounts I’ve read and I’ve been a student of Texas history for many years. Excellent.

Santa Ana came to disarm the TexIans, after brutally disarming the rest of Mexico. TexIans resisted in Gonzalez, telling the would be authoritarian and socialists to “come and take it” referring to their canon and guns. Don’t be fooled by the socialist agenda in America today. They seek to inflict the same brutality on citizens. Russia in the Ukraine today, Nazi’s in Poland, Stalin behind the iron curtain; and the list goes on and on. “Remember the Alamo” and “come and take it” should be put into the proper historical context for today’s citizens. Maybe it was Winston Churchill, or not, but the saying is quite valid, “those who do not remember history are condemned to relive it” It was Thomas Jefferson who said, “an armed society is a polite society.”

I enjoyed the pace of this book. However, I don’t know why the author included and presented speculative information from the Jose Enrique de la Peña diary as fact. Nothing new in this book. Great general overview of Texas Revolution.
