Description

“An impressive work of mythic magnitude that may turn out to be Stephen King’s greatest literary achievement” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), The Gunslinger is the first volume in the epic Dark Tower Series.

A #1 national bestseller, The Gunslinger introduces readers to one of Stephen King’s most powerful creations, Roland of Gilead: The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which mirrors our own in frightening ways, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.

Inspired in part by the Robert Browning narrative poem, “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came,” The Gunslinger is “a compelling whirlpool of a story that draws one irretrievable to its center” (Milwaukee Sentinel). It is “brilliant and fresh…and will leave you panting for more” (Booklist).

This is my third time reading this over 40 years. I find new and interesting things each time. The movie wasn’t as fulfilling as this book. This is not scary but more fantasy and alternate realities. Love the plot and characters

First book I’ve read in a series. A very slow start but the last 60 ish pages were solid. We will view this as like a season one in a whole show and see how it comes together.

The cadence of this book is biblical, and the lore of the world draws you in. The magic is visceral, in a way that you doubt magic is used at all. Motivations are alien and understandable, somehow. This book left me wanting more, and fearing what’s coming.

My Journey to the Dark Tower I recently decided to start reading the Dark Tower series but wanted the full experience so I got some recommendations and compiled a list of books relevant (hopefully!) to the extended lore. This book 3 on that list. As the first book that actually deals directly with the Dark Tower, I can’t say I’m wowed. I found my self pretty bored most of the way through. It’s a long walk through a hot desert and a long trip through a dark tunnel and memory lane. There are a couple points where the Gunslinger has some psychedelic experiences and I can say with confidence from my own experience that the author is writing from his own experience. So that was cool. Otherwise, as dry as the desert he’s walking through. I’ve got a desert in my brain now. So I guess that’s a nod to effective writing. Spoiler. Still no Dark Tower. If this guy’s journey is any indication, it’s going to be a while before I get there.

The world is ugly, the characters are uglier. Stephen King’s writing flows and is as descriptive as ever, but I really couldn’t get into this one. The first half of the book drags, and the mystery of it all wasn’t enough to make the latter half worth it. The writing is oddly sexual in a lot of places to the point where a child describes his own mother as “scrawny but in a sexy kind of way” and it all gives the story as weird and uncomfortable tone. Also the way women are written in this book is terrible. Every time I started to emotionally connect to Roland as the protagonist, he’d do something to completely disconnect him from anything likable. A lot of people seem to really like this series, and maybe it gets better in other books, but I don’t think I’ll be reading more to find out.
